This Simple Inspection Could Save You From The Next Storm

Every year, we see hundreds of basements that have suffered water damage. There are many factors or causes for water damage in a basement. Burst pipes, sump pump failure, and water tank backups are among these causes. But no cause is more preventable than water coming in as a result of a crack in your foundation.
Even a small crack in your foundation can expose you to water damage risk. This risk is heightened during the spring storm season. Water can easily seep in through the tiniest of cracks, and accumulate on the inside, resulting in major damage. In some extreme cases, wind can cause the cracks to get bigger, which just allows more water in if the conditions are right.
You should conduct an annual check on your foundation to ensure that it is watertight, save for the sump pump, if present. Check both the outside above-ground portion, as well as the interior below-ground portion of your foundation. This will ensure that you are checking for anywhere that water could come in. If you notice any cracks, regardless of size, contact a professional or seal the cracks yourself.
