Trash Chute Fire Leads To Massive Water Damage

Recently, a mid-size apartment building had an unusual fire occur that turned into a large-scale disaster.  

Somehow, a fire started on the sixth floor of the building inside the trash chute.  The heat and smoke tripped the smoke alarms and the building’s sprinkler system.  While the fire itself was not that large, the water used by the fire department and the water from the sprinkler system created thousands of gallons of water that needed to be removed.  Furthermore, the water began to descend from the sixth floor, and pour into at least the two floors below on that side of the building.  While the sprinklers may have saved the building from further fire damage, the water was an issue.

SERVPRO of Greenwich was called in to fix the issue, which had occurred around 10pm.  Our crew responded quickly with the appropriate equipment and materials.  We extracted the excess water first, so that proper drying equipment could be set up.  An array of dehumidifiers and air movers were strategically placed throughout the area with an hour to begin the process.
